Finding Common Ground in a Heated World

By Rev. Dr. Michael McMorrow, Spiritual Director

Talking about politics these days can feel like walking through a minefield. Even conversations with friends and family can quickly turn into arguments when emotions run high. We often want to be heard and understood, but instead, we end up talking past each other, feeling more divided than before. In a time when polarization is everywhere, it can feel almost impossible to have a civil conversation about the issues that matter most.

That’s where Braver Angels comes in. Braver Angels is a national nonprofit dedicated to bridging the partisan divide. They create safe and structured spaces where people of different political perspectives can come together, not to debate or “win,” but to truly listen and learn from one another. Their workshops and conversations are designed to reduce stereotypes, foster understanding, and teach the skills of respectful communication.

Instead of heated arguments, Braver Angels encourages us to ask questions, listen with curiosity, and share our perspectives without fear of judgment. In these safe spaces, people discover that we actually have more in common than we thought—and even when we disagree, we can do so with respect.

On Saturday, September 20, 2025, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, Braver Angels Los Angeles will be hosting a special event at the Center for Spiritual Living Granada Hills (17622 Chatsworth St, Granada Hills, CA). This gathering will be a chance to practice these transformative skills in real time and connect with others who are committed to building understanding across divides.

If you’re ready to learn how to have better conversations about tough issues, this is the place to start. Join us, and let’s turn down the heat—together.
